EP #6: 'The Data' with Baden Pailthorpe & Aaron Coutts

This week we’re talking about Baden Pailthorpe’s work, ‘Clanger’. Exploring the aesthetics of data and technology, ‘Clanger’ pairs statistical tracking data of AFL player performance with the emotional intensities of the crowd to create 3D virtual artworks.

In statistical terms, the word ‘Clanger’ refers to a turnover or a silly mistake made by a player in an AFL match. The criteria for each player’s usefulness is defined wholly by the data they generate during the game— AFL players are tracked using micro wearable devises. The amount of data generated from these devices in a given game is immense; every movement is tracked, stored and interpreted in an effort to understand performance, mitigate injury and measure value. Joined by scientist and sports researcher, Aaron Coutts, to discuss the challenges and success of their collaboration.

EP #5: 'The Cells' with Helen Pynor & Dr. Jochen Rink

This Episode, we talk with artist Helen Pynor about her project, ‘The End is a Distant Memory’. Working with cells from supermarket bought chicken breast, Pynor’s work explores the philosophically and experientially ambiguous zones, of the life-death boundary and organ transplantation. Her practice draws on her dual backgrounds in the biological sciences and the visual arts to engage directly with the materiality of human and non-human bodies using the mediums of photography, sculpture, video and installation. We are also joined by scientist and collaborator on the project, Dr. Jochen Rink, from The Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, Dresden.

EP #4: 'The Earth' with Grayson Cooke & Emma Walker

On EP #4 ‘The Earth’ DLUX is joined by the artists behind "Open Air". A visual setting of the 2013 album "Open" by Australian cult band The Necks. It is also a form of creative earth imaging; it combines timelapse Landsat satellite imagery of Australia, with motion-controlled aerial photography of the paintings and processes of Australian painter Emma Walker. Together, these two vastly different forms of aerial earth imaging combine to produce a complex picture of a changing planet.

EP #3: 'The Stars' with Michaela Gleave, Amanda Cole & Astronomer Michael Fitzgerald

On Episode #3 of The Constellations Podcast we talk to the team behind ‘A Galaxy of Suns’ an app for your smart phone that connects you with the unseen motions of our galaxy. Created by artist Michaela Gleave, composer Amanda Cole and programmer Warren Armstrong, A Galaxy of Suns gives your smart phone the ability to ‘play’ the skies, turning each star into music, as it rises above the horizon in front of you.
